[Provocations and Pantings] Franchising Church: The Latest Greatest Trend of... : In Christianity Today's recent magazine (September 2005), there is an interesting article called "High-Tech Circuit Riders" by Bob Smietana which reveals what could become the mother of all inventions of modern-day pragmatism of the megachurch movement. It is called the "franchise church" or satellite church.
[The Night Watch World News Prayer Network] #249: IFI and some 40 other pro-family organizations from across the nation wrote AFL-CIO President John Sweeney asking him to rescind the recent pro-homosexual resolution and warning him that they would not “stand silently by while national AFL-CIO officials use the hard-earned dues money of Americas working men and women ” against their will and at odds with their own deeply-held religious and moral convictions ” to advance a political agenda that threatens to undermine the institutions of God-ordained marriage and the family.”
[Kenya Democracy Project] Why Do Some American Christians Resent Joel... : Far from being a charlatan, new age prosperity salesman, I hold the opinion that Joel perhaps more than any other contemporary preacher in America is veering closer and closer to the original message of the actual Jesus Christ who was a very humble dude who upset the high priests of organized religion, refused to condemn sinners, hang out with hookers and other shady underworld characters and was not impressed very much by wealth. The irony of course, when it comes to Joel Osteen is that he is a humble guy who does not mind living in a million dollar mansion and charging ten, fifteen, twenty, forty five dollars for the chance to hear him speak.
[theboxtank] Exurbs And The Megachurch: While the answer may not lie in New Urbanist planning strategies, or the Jane Jacobian nostalgic city of the mid twentieth century, there has to be a solution other than the Megachurch and the homophobe Republicans they are breeding. While the Mall or the derivative of the Mall, Wal-Mart, seem to be a shallow replacement for public spaces the traditional city provided, at least there is still the possibility a burnt-out junkie might take a wiff of your pant-leg in an institution that isn't driven by such a rigid ideology.
