Akyol, in using (not in the article above) but elsewhere, that Protestant phrase "sola scriptura" primly pretends for all the world to be a Calvin or a Zwingli. But what he really is is a less extreme Defender, not so much of the Faith, but of the Ottoman Turkish or Turkish Faith, that is he combines, amusingly, both elements of the True Believer in Islam, with the seeming-opposing zealous nationalism of the Kemalist: a thoroughly modern Turk, of the kind that isn't with the full-fledged fanatics but not quite a secularist of the hard-driving business (Sebanci) or intellectual (Pamuk) class.
