 [PALINET Discovery Tools] MediaWiki Extensions for PLN: We needed to add one field to the login form, and we needed to allow a group of people to quickly and conveniently approve new accounts for access to restricted materials.  The solution was a system that sends e-mails to a group of approvers when an account is created, and which allows those approvers to send a reply in a format that will result in the MediaWiki user being placed into a user group that has rights to the restricted material.  I was able to use standard Perl modules and smrsh functionality on our Linux server to create the new account approval system.

 [Educational Insanity] Transparency, Blogs, and Personal Learning Networks (PLN): If I can get past the tenure hurdle, I’d love to embark on an empirical journey around this notion of collaborative/digital learning.  I’d like to know how PLN’s jive with theories of learning, community, etc.  I’d like to know how we can foster PLNs in doctoral education.  I’d like to know how we can use PLNs to advance school leadership.  So, I guess that’s why I blog, tweet, comment, etc.  I’m learning about learning.

[Walt at Random] Even fewer posts: I’ve gotten off to a running start over the past two weeks in setting out milestones and looking at the current beta wiki to see how things might proceed. We decided not to add me to the program as such–probably just as well, given how early it is in the process–but I will be meeting with most of the PLN Advisory Group to work through some issues I’ve identified.
