[Blog Maverick] Wanted - New TV Show Ideas « blog maverick: point out to the fool who said it that The Shield, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Schindler\’s List, In The Heat Of The Night and an endless list of other tv shows and movies have protagonists who are anything but likeable and yet we can\’t help but watch them.) I could list what I think the real \”rules\” of storytelling are…but the article would be too long and the important point is that you have to KNOW them, not simply be able to repeat them.

[Nonduality Blog] Adi Da is Dead « Nonduality Blog: (or “whence am I”), with the exact sense in Tamil the way Ramama Maharshi meant it not being quite conveyed in those english terms and with the modern cultural framework. We can’t help but see ourselves as a consciousness inside a body even if we seem to travel to subtle realms, and the intent is to illuminate and expose this fallacy in a way the conscious mind can’t do by mere belief or affirmation.
[School Library Journal - Grade 5 and Up News] Grades 5 & Up - 7/1/2009 - School Library Journal: For example, a shot of a gymnast supporting himself in mid-air is matched with Lance Armstrong’s comment, “Pain is temporary, quitting lasts forever,” and an image of a little girl taking a picture appears with a quip from Dorothea Lange: “Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still.”
[Animam Recro] The Fellowship of Friends Discussion, part 4 « Animam Recro: The fact that contributors sometimes quote, criticize, correct, guide, opine, react, pontificate, judge, not-judge, discuss, have brain-farts, on this blog, is not only in the nature of blogs, but more significantly, it is in direct response to the nature of the fellowship. That is, if the fellowship had been open, honest, transparent, inclusive, and were it capable of disclosures (on it’s official web site) of it’s financials, had it’s own forum for open discussion (free from fear of reprisals), and had RB not increasingly discouraged real dialog, then the nature of this blog may be different.
[Climate Progress] The deniers are winning, especially with the GOP « Climate Progress: Some months after the IPCC SPM report was published the authors of the earlier report published a study that concluded that Greenland and Antarctica combined are losing mass today, not primarily due to melting, but due to the flow of ice to the ocean from ice streams and glaciers, which has apparently accelerated in the past decade, concluding that over the course of the 21st century, these processes could counteract the snowfall gains, so that there could be a negative mass balance. The conclusion was that this combined effect could be enough to raise sea level by 0.35 millimeters per year (3.5 centimeters over the 21st century, not 70 meters, as predicted by Hansen).
[Larvatus Prodeo] Saturday Salon - The Truth is Out There! edition at Larvatus Prodeo: Newtons Third Law: The discusser is not correct in repeatedly claiming that Newtons third law is violated in the paper and particularly in concluding that the “two-phase collapse scenario is scientifically implausible because it ignores Newtons third law and the equal but opposite upward force dictated by it.” As explained at the outset in every course on mechanics of materials, this law is automatically satisfied, since all the calculations are based on the concept of stress or internal force, which consists of a pair of opposite forces of equal magnitude acting on the opposite surfaces of any imagined cut through the material or structure. This concept is so central to the discipline of structural mechanics and self-evident to structural engineers that Newtons third law is never even mentioned in publications.
