Teachers who are just in it for the retirement package need to be removed and replaced by teachers who are the best at what they do–but we won’t get anything like enough of those teachers until the compensation and conditions are commensurate with the labor the good teacher puts in. And that labor, by the way, should be restricted to the classrom and to participating in the creation of meaningful assessment and standards, rather than diffused into coaching cheerleading, conducting lunch duty, and a dozen other non-instructional and ultimately irrelevant duties.
