[Matthew Yglesias] Matthew Yglesias » Cold War Hawks and the Soviet Economy: The Team B warn darkly about a very “determined and effective Soviet civil defense effort” including “emphasis on the training of civilian personnel of all ages in protective measures to include practice evacuations of heavily populated areas”. Of course, these ambitious efforts “appear to be integrated with all other military programs to maximize the USSRs capabilities to fight a nuclear war and emerge from it with a viable society,” providing an “unmistakable clue to Soviet overall doctrine with regard to general nuclear war.” A constant theme is that the Russkies clearly reject the M.A.D.
[CSIS: Publication Feed] Afghan Metrics | Center for Strategic and International Studies: Its government, forces, and intelligence are deeply divided about the war, the continued value of trying to manipulate the Afghan Taliban to serve Pakistan’s interests in Afghanistan, and whether the US can be trusted or is the source of a new threat on Pakistan’s western borders. Pakistan is a tenuous ally at best, faces massive internal stability problems, and is only likely to fully engage as an ally if the various Afghan insurgent groups and Al Qa’ida become a direct threat to the Pakistani government.

[SWJ Blog] True Transformation: A Response (SWJ Blog): Now, within such a grand strategic framework focused on securing peace, the military should develop capabilities which support more limited, focused objectives (a scalpel) as well as broader, full spectrum combat objectives (broadsword). ... Is it just me or is that a perfectly logical priority allocation... I have to go with Gian and Schmedlap. The article is a polemic with some basis in fact that hyperbolically condemns a number of quietly intellectual Officers -- and a ...

[Barry's Arts Blog and Update] Barry's Arts Blog and Update: LOOKING BACK ON FIVE YEARS OF ...: Looking back on 2004, the 2005 year panel recognized that revenue was an issue, and that there might be economic problems ahead, but that insight was based primarily on the fear that the costs of the Iraq war would ultimately negatively impact the arts by relegating them as a low priority for national public funding. We didnt take the dot.com collapse as a harbinger of any greater economic collapse.

[Dave's Blog - All Comments] Welcome to Dave's blog! - Dave's Blog: The ride is definitely agonizingly slow on frigid days when your legs are spent after a full day skiing the Plunge and you would absolutely kill for a foot rest, but on the other hand, it's great that that side of the mountain remains untouched for so long on big powder days, simply because it's less accessible - There's something to be said for still being able to hit fresh lines after lunch on a good snow day.

[NEASC HOME] NEASC HOME » Blog Archive » Standard 3 DRAFT: There has been improvement over the past several years in the extent to which decision making has become more transparent and information of importance is less concentrated at the top. And there is extensive recognition that a serious effort is being made to create a more democratic organization with open communication and shared decision making. For example, in addition to the formal channels of communication, there have been several new initiatives at the college in recent years which have further facilitated participatory governance. The first is Process Management, implemented at the college in 2004. PM is an initiative developed to foster continuous improvement and solve organizational problems from the ground up. Process Management Teams made up of personnel from across the college, have been formed to address specific problems and propose specific, workable solutions that can then be implemented. These Teams have recommended reconfiguration of the library, a method for events planning and scheduling, and the development of a freshman seminar, to name just a few. One example of a successful Process Management effort is the project focused on the future of the library. As a result of the research conducted and recommendations made in this project, the first floor of the College Library is currently being renovated to create an Information Commons that will more effectively serve the needs of today’s students. (A list of the 29 Process Management efforts conducted between fall 2004 and fall 2007 is located on the college web site). Process Management has had a powerful impact at Northern Essex. It has facilitated college involvement in decision making and fostered collaboration across divisions, while improving institutional effectiveness.
